If you’ve ever been curious how an artist can take a blank canvas and transform it in a life-like portrait, you should check out today’s YouTube clip. Nico di Mattia provides us with a first hand look as he digitally paints Scarlett Johansson with nothing more than a reference photo, a computer, and a tablet. (A tablet is a device that connects to a computer that allows an artist to simulate the use of a pen or brush on a flat surface, allowing them to use the same motions that they would in real life, but instead control a mouse pointer on a screen.)

The 6 minute video is time lapsed over a few hours, but you get to see everthing he does, starting with a white canvas, and ending up with an incredibly realistic painting of one of my favorite actresses of all time. It’s really incredible to see a few baselines become something so detailed - at one point he zooms in so you can see him create the necklace with tiny emeralds, each reflecting the light.

I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to my adoring fan out there for going so long without an update. It’s weird, but I’m pretty sure that for the first time in my whole life, I’ve actually had enough of a life outisde of the computer that I just haven’t been online enough to post anything. I thought that today, being God’s day of rest, I take a day out of my hectic schedule and update all 3 of you with what’s going on in my life.
