New Sony Bravia Commercial: Plasticine City

First of all, if you haven’t seen the previous two commercials, you should watch them first. The 250,000 bouncy ball video shows 250,000 bouncy balls being dumped down the street/hillside of San Francisco. The paint explosions of Glasgow was their second foray into the artistic commercial business, setting off paint bombs around an abandoned apartment block in Scotland.

Now they have bunnies on the streets of Manhattan. They used 2.5 tonnes of plasticine, 40 animators spent 4 hours for every 4 seconds of footage shot, and a total of 189 bunnies. Incredible.

Dice stacking. Yes, it’s actually cooler than it sounds.

I would love to try and explain how fucking cool ‘dice stacking’ is, but I’d come off as sounding like someone trying to sell you on a watch-your-paint-dry service. Just watch the damn video and be fucking amazed.

Digital art at its finest

If you’ve ever been curious how an artist can take a blank canvas and transform it in a life-like portrait, you should check out today’s YouTube clip. Nico di Mattia provides us with a first hand look as he digitally paints Scarlett Johansson with nothing more than a reference photo, a computer, and a tablet. (A tablet is a device that connects to a computer that allows an artist to simulate the use of a pen or brush on a flat surface, allowing them to use the same motions that they would in real life, but instead control a mouse pointer on a screen.)

The 6 minute video is time lapsed over a few hours, but you get to see everthing he does, starting with a white canvas, and ending up with an incredibly realistic painting of one of my favorite actresses of all time. It’s really incredible to see a few baselines become something so detailed – at one point he zooms in so you can see him create the necklace with tiny emeralds, each reflecting the light.
